Traffic Signal Priority Systems

Traffic signal priority systems are a type of system that allows the normal operation of traffic lights to be preempted. The most common use of these systems is to manipulate traffic signals in the path of an emergency or transit vehicle to give it right-of-way, to help reduce response times, assist with on-time performance, and enhance traffic safety. 

Traffic Signal Priority (TSP) reduces dwell time at traffic signals for transit vehicles by holding green lights longer or shortening red lights. TSP may be implemented at individual intersections or across corridors or entire street systems. Signal Priority is used to provide extra green time at intersections to larger and street-running transit vehicles, such as trucks, buses, light rail, and streetcars. By helping the bus or truck avoid a stop at a red light, this additional time can help the bus arrive at stops on-time, and can prevent traffic delays and congestion

The benefits of Traffic Signal Priority for public transport vehicles are to reduce delays at intersections, and hence reduce overall running time. Reducing the variance of time spent stopped at traffic signals, improves service reliability.

After completion, a Traffic Signal Priority is requested for vehicles running trips that are late by a configurable threshold measured from the last timepoint.
